RESUMO

The sucess of the national food and nutrition program of Colombia is due to a number of factors, including the following:

1) The program has been promoted, coordinated, and directed by a National Nutrition Institute (at present the Nutrition Department of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute), an institution headed by nutrition and public health professional personnel and receiving technical and financial assistance from PASB/WHO, FAO, PMA and UNICEF

2)The financial assistance provided by the integrated Food and Nutrition Program (PINA) encouraged the Government of Colombia, with the result that the financial resources of the program are now largely domestic in origin

3) Since the initiation of the program, training of the staff of the Institute has been in progress

4) From the early stages of the program, schools of nutritionists-dietitians have been organized, as have been courses in public health nutrition for graduate physicians and the Regional Center for Training in Domestic Economy and Applied Nutrition (CRECENA)

5) The program, which has a public health orientation, is based on the principles of the epidemiology of preventive medicine

6) Most of the research studies of the Institute are aimed at finding practical solutions to the nutrition problems peculiar to the country concerned

7) The program coordinates, at the international, national, departmental and local ...(AU)

RESUMO

Applied nutrition programs, promoted and supported by PAHO/WHO, FAO, and UNICEF, could be the starting point for far-ranging national food and nutrition plans in the developing countries. This article gives an account of Colombia’s encouraging experience in this respect, and discusses the many circumstances and factors which have made it possible to expand and amalgamate a variety of nutrition programs into a plan at the national level.

RESUMO

The nutritionist-dietitian must have sufficient knowledge and skills to allow her to play a key role in the dietary and nutrition programs of integrated health services, which operate basically through health centers and hospitals

She must participate in the planning of every phase of these programs. One of the most important of these phases, because of the scarcity of qualified personnel in Latin America, is the education and training of professional and subprofessional personnel that will cooperate with her in the health and nutrition education of the community

She must cooperate also in programs of nutrition education, recuperation, and supplementary diet which the health center carries out, and in similar activities at the hospital she should test her teaching abilities in school health programs, especially those aimed at the mother and child; and she should organize, supervize, and evaluate these programs

On the basis of the nutrition and dietary service included in an integrated public health program, her knowledge should include: basic training in nutrition; a knowlege of foods; experience in organizing and administering food services; and basic notions of public health(AU)
